Comment is open until Oct. 18 on four miles of I-40 improvements through Gallup

The New Mexico Department of Transportation is planning improvements to a four-mile stretch of I-40 in Gallup, and is taking public comment on them until Oct. 18.

The work would cover mileposts 17.92 to 22.12, within the urban area of Gallup. The goal is to enhance safety and operations and bring the corridor up to current design standards, the department said in a letter to agencies and community partners.

The project team is working with the Federal Highway Administration, and calls the project the I-40 Road and Art Panel Improvements in Gallup. An online presentation outlining the project and the improvements is posted at https://www.dot.nm.gov/event/i-40-reconstruction-in-gallup-online-open-house-cn6100931/, and can be viewed anytime between Sept. 17 and Oct. 18, 2026.

The City of Gallup said the link it first circulated for the presentation was broken and has been updated.
