Power goes out across Gallup and nearby communities, and the utilities say it has been restored

A power outage hit all of Gallup and the area around it on Friday evening, and Continental Divide Electric Cooperative said at 10:20 p.m. that power had been restored.

The Gallup Fire Department said traffic lights throughout the city were out, and reminded drivers that those signals become four-way stops. It asked residents not to call 911 to report the outage, saying emergency dispatch and the utility companies already knew.

The city said its Electric Department was aware of the city-wide outage and that it was caused by an outage at an upstream electric provider. In an update at 8:40 p.m., the city said PNM had identified the cause and was working to fix it, and had given an estimate of two hours to restore power.

The sheriff's office said it believed the outage was a PNM feeder issue, and that it had received reports that Thoreau, Jamestown and Gamerco were without power as well. It later added a line to the top of its notice saying power had been restored.

Continental Divide Electric Cooperative said at 6:57 p.m. that PNM was experiencing an issue out of the SmithLake substation affecting around 2,000 of the cooperative's members, and that PNM crews were on their way. It said it had a large outage affecting members on the Thoreau side of Bluewater Lake, and that its members would be restored once PNM had fixed its equipment.

At 8:05 p.m. the cooperative said it had not yet received an estimate for restoration from PNM. At 9:03 p.m. it said power would be out for at least two more hours while PNM continued working and switching out its equipment. At 10:20 p.m. it said power had been restored.

The Crownpoint Chapter said the Crownpoint community and area went under a Continental Divide outage at 6:15 p.m. At 10:05 p.m. the chapter said power was flickering and was on in some areas, and was to be restored.

The city said emergency services remained online and reachable through standard methods, including 911 for emergencies.
