Three national forests are taking applications for a committee that steers federal project money

The Lincoln, Gila and Cibola national forests are seeking members for the Southern New Mexico Resource Advisory Committee until Sept. 30, the Cibola National Forest said.

Committee members attend quarterly meetings with other members from across the state and directly review project proposals and recommend where federal dollars go, the notice said. Travel and time are compensated, and virtual attendance is available.

The forests said they are building a balanced committee, and listed industry partners, local businesses, range permittees, outdoor recreationists, environmental groups and local educators among the members they want. The notice asked New Mexico residents to apply.

The money is Title II funding from the federal Secure Rural Schools program, which the notice said pays for local projects including trail construction, hazardous fuels reduction, watershed and habitat restoration, road maintenance and range improvements.

It said applications will be accepted until all positions are filled, and gave a phone number and an email address for the committee coordinator.
