UNM-Gallup holds Campus Safety Week starting Sept. 21

UNM-Gallup holds its 2026 Campus Safety Week from Monday through Friday, with a resource fair, a question-and-answer forum with public safety personnel, an after-hours campus walk and Narcan training.

The week runs Monday, Sept. 21, through Friday, Sept. 25, the college said, and the full agenda is at goto.unm.edu/gcsw26.

McKinley County Sheriff James Maiorano III opened the week with a presentation about the ALICE active shooting response system. ALICE stands for Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, Evacuate.

The campus safety forum is the morning of Tuesday, Sept. 22. It gives members of the campus community a chance to put questions to public safety personnel over coffee sponsored by Student Affairs.

The campus safety walk is the evening of the same day. Students, faculty and staff are invited to walk the campus together to identify safety issues, such as the need for better lighting or the pruning of overgrown vegetation.

The campus safety fair is Thursday, Sept. 24, and will feature organizations from the Gallup-McKinley County area providing information about their services and resources.

Other events during the week are a re-introduction of the UNMSafe app, campus office safety training, interactive personal safety training, Narcan and hands-only CPR training, and building coordinator training.

This is the fourth annual Campus Safety Week at UNM-Gallup. It is organized by the UNM-Gallup Safety Committee, which Interim Chancellor John Zimmerman now chairs. He expanded its membership to include more internal departments and the UNM Emergency Management office in Albuquerque, and invited local public safety agencies to take part as ex-officio members, including the Gallup Police Department, McKinley County Sheriff's Office, and Gallup Fire Department.

“As I mentioned in my convocation address, campus safety is a top priority as we move through the year,” Zimmerman said in a message to the campus community. The reconstituted committee met for the first time in early September, and he said the college is planning a year-round schedule of meetings, events, drills and trainings.
