Gallup police mark Overdose Awareness Day with a naloxone lesson

The Gallup Police Department posted a naloxone walkthrough with Officer Brown for International Overdose Awareness Day on Aug. 31. Naloxone rapidly reverses an opioid overdose, the department said, and it asked residents to pass the information to family, students and colleagues. The department cited a DEA finding that 29% of fentanyl-laced counterfeit pills tested in fiscal 2025 held a potentially lethal dose, down from 7 in 10 in 2023.

The Gallup Police Department used International Overdose Awareness Day on Monday to walk residents through naloxone, the medicine that rapidly reverses an opioid overdose.

In a short video, Officer Brown explains what the drug does and how it is used. The department asked people to watch it and share it with family members, students or colleagues. "It could save a life, you could save a life," the post said.

The department also passed along a Drug Enforcement Administration figure: of the fentanyl-laced counterfeit prescription pills the DEA laboratory analyzed in fiscal year 2025, 29% contained a potentially lethal dose of fentanyl. That is down from the 7-in-10 figure the agency reported in 2023, which the department called "still too high."

The post did not name a local place to obtain naloxone or a treatment line to call.
