Crownpoint Chapter takes up a petition on New Mexico election laws at its Tuesday meeting

The Crownpoint Chapter meets Tuesday on a draft agenda that includes a petition for formal tribal consultation with New Mexico over changes to state election laws.

The draft lists Resolution CPC: 26-09-03, petitioning formal tribal consultation between the Eastern Navajo Agency Council and New Mexico regarding potential changes to state election laws, policies and procedures that may impact the Navajo Nation, its voters and its communities. The resolution names the governor, the secretary of state, the cabinet secretary of the Indian Affairs Department and members of the state Legislature.

Harrenson Gorman is listed to present on issues pertaining to uranium mining within the area. Paulene McCabe, listed as elections coordinator, is also set to present, and her office is given as the McKinley County Board of Elections.

The chapter also takes up its financial report for the month ending Aug. 31 and a resolution accepting the fiscal year 2026 general funds carry over budget, which the draft lists with its amount to be determined. Two further resolutions would support an application from Navajo Technical University to a federal tribal colleges research grants program, and accept the chapter's fall 2026 scholarship recipients.

The draft says the Navajo Nation fiscal year ends Sept. 30 and that the next one begins Oct. 1.
