City says Facebook deleted council meeting videos, not staff

Facebook's 2025 policy automatically deletes live videos after 30 days, the city says. Council meetings are recorded and archived on city servers; copies are available by public-records request.

Council meeting videos that used to sit on the City of Gallup's Facebook page were removed by Facebook itself and not by city staff, the city said in a news release. Facebook adopted a policy in 2025 of deleting live videos after 30 days, which took down videos the page had previously saved.

Staff checked the page's activity log, which records actions taken on the page, and its trash, which shows deleted content, the city said. Neither showed a video removed by an administrator or by any other user. The city said claims that videos were deleted on purpose are false.

Every council meeting is recorded and the recordings are archived on city servers, the city said, and Facebook is not the official repository for them. Copies are available through an Inspection of Public Records Act request.
