The Cibola National Forest and National Grasslands is taking public comment on a proposed uranium mine on and near Jesus Mesa in the Mount Taylor Ranger District near Grants.
The forest said it will publish a notice of intent to prepare an environmental impact statement for the proposed Roca Honda Mine Project, and that the proposal and the actions it covers are posted for public review on its own website.
The project includes uranium mine development, operations and reclamation over about 21 years on about 87 acres of National Forest System lands.
The forest said the country currently imports much of its uranium, and that the project would strengthen the nation's critical mineral supply by increasing the availability of uranium, which is used for nuclear energy production, medical technology and scientific research.
The post did not name the company behind the proposal or say when mining would begin. It said the public can also follow the project on the FAST-41 Permitting Dashboard.
