More than 50 traffic stops in a joint operation against speeding and racing

More than 50 traffic stops were made over the weekend in a joint operation addressing complaints about speeding, racing and reckless driving, the McKinley County Sheriff's Office said.

The sheriff's office said it worked alongside Gallup Police in the operation, and that New Mexico State Police took part as well. The stops ranged from speeding to texting and driving, equipment violations and lane usage.

Several arrests were made, police said, including on bench warrants, a revoked license and DWI. The sheriff's office did not name anyone arrested or say how many people were arrested.

The sheriff's office called it one of many operations to come, and said teamwork among agencies helps make a bigger impact for the citizens of Gallup and McKinley County.

Impaired-driving enforcement in Gallup sits within conditions no traffic stop describes. The county has a poverty rate roughly twice the state as a whole, and the off-reservation liquor retail serving a far larger region is concentrated in and around the city.
