Driver arrested on a DWI charge after truck ends up in a ditch off Dani Drive

A driver was arrested on a charge of driving while intoxicated after officers found a red truck in a ditch behind an apartment building, the Gallup Police Department said.

Officer Jordan Gemme was dispatched to 650 Dani Drive at the Sagebrush Apartments at about 12:05 a.m. on Sept. 2 on a report of a vehicle collision. Officers found the truck in the ditch behind the building and located the driver, whom police identified as Orrin Folger, 33, at the scene. Police said Folger admitted to crashing the vehicle after falling asleep.

During the investigation officers found both opened and unopened containers of vodka inside the vehicle, the department said, and blood was visible on one of the open containers. Folger agreed to chemical testing after being read the implied consent advisory, and police said a breathalyzer test showed a blood alcohol content of .16, which the department said is over twice the legal limit.

Folger was arrested on a charge of driving while intoxicated, taken to the hospital for medical clearance and processed at the county detention center, police said. A pistol was also recovered from inside the vehicle.

Drunk-driving arrests in Gallup sit within conditions no single police report describes. The county has a poverty rate roughly twice the state as a whole, and the off-reservation liquor retail serving a far larger region is concentrated in and around the city.
